Artist Profile

Plinio Carvajal has been making photographs since 1954 at the age of nine.
At the beginning he was inspired by the family surroundings, and most particular
by his father's encourage to see and photograph the landscape at vacation family rides.
He had the opportunity to use and experiment with different cameras and films,
from his first "Box Camera" and "Brownie" to a "Contaflex 35 m.m." in 1956.

He also started darkroom practices in 1955 and made some 8 m.m.
and 16 m.m. documentary films along with photography
up to 1962 when he traveled to Los Angeles to study Arts and Sciences.

Living in USA gave him the opportunity to travel extensively photographing
landscapes of some American National Parks on 35 m.m. Kodachrome Film.
In 1967 he continued his practice on landscape in Canada.

In 1968, he started working free-lance for several advertising agencies
and international companies for a period of 12 years,
making professional photography for advertising, packages and calendars
as well as professional film making commercials for theater and television.

This last experience developed his discipline to a tight composition.
At the same time in 1971, he started making medium-format (2¼" X 2¼")
photography with Hasselblad cameras on color negative film
in order to have a total control over the image in his specialized darkroom.

Having gathered much useful knowledge up to this point, he felt free to begin
his artistic visual expression trough natural light color photography.
He traveled throughout most Colombian regions, searching for those
magical moments with faultless natural light environment in order for him to capture
precious images of nature and native people away from big cities,
capturing them through his warm and poetic vision which makes each work unique.
It is from this time up to the present that he makes the images
he offers now as fine art prints.

He has participated extensively around the country in group and solo exhibitions since 1974,
and he continues showing his artistic work on several solo itinerant exhibitions
inside and outside Colombia.

His imagery is in private and corporate collections in the United States,
Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia,
and his fine art photography has been widely published in books and calendars.

Although he has collected up to the present a huge amount of superb images,
he only offers a few selected ones from his complete portfolio,
as signed limited edition Fine Art prints to private collectors.
